Race day is not the time to test new settings. Your watch should reduce decision fatigue, not create it.
Night-before checklist
- Charge the watch and any heart-rate strap.
- Confirm GPS mode and battery estimate.
- Load the course or route if needed.
- Set data fields: lap pace, elapsed time, distance, heart rate or power.
- Disable distracting notifications.
- Confirm auto-lap or manual-lap strategy.
Morning-of checklist
- Start satellite lock before the corral gets crowded.
- Check that the watch is not in low-power mode unintentionally.
- Wet chest-strap electrodes if using a strap.
- Use manual mile markers if GPS distance looks off.
Best pacing setup
For most races, lap pace and elapsed time are safer than instant pace. Instant pace can jump around, especially downtown or on crowded courses. Manual laps at mile markers can keep the watch aligned with the official course.
Bottom line
A race-day wearable setup should be boring, tested, and easy to read under stress.
