The Cirqa (Garmin styles it CIRQA) and WHOOP look like the same idea: a band with no screen that tracks sleep, recovery, and training around the clock. The difference is how you pay and what you get back. Garmin sells you the hardware and includes its core training metrics at no extra cost. WHOOP sells you a membership and wraps its data in better coaching. For most runners, the decision comes down to one question: do you want more data, or a better explanation of it?

Quick answer: choose the Cirqa ($199.99, no subscription required) if you want Garmin's recovery and training metrics, especially if you already own a Garmin watch or Edge. Choose WHOOP if you value its coaching and are happy paying $199 to $359 a year. Neither replaces a GPS running watch: both rely on your phone for GPS, and neither has a screen.

Cost over one and three years

In year one, the two are nearly identical: $199.99 for the Cirqa versus $199 for WHOOP One. The gap opens after that, because a WHOOP purchase is a 12-month membership that renews automatically, while the Cirqa has no required fee.

OptionYear oneThree years
Garmin Cirqa$199.99$199.99
Garmin Cirqa + Connect+ (annual)$269.98$409.96
WHOOP One$199$597
WHOOP Peak$239$717
WHOOP Life$359$1,077

These are US list prices as of October 2026, so verify them at checkout. The three-year figures assume prices do not change; WHOOP renews at its then-current price. Add $59.99 if you want the Cirqa's Upper Arm Band. WHOOP's free trial rolls into a paid Peak membership ($239 a year), not One, unless you cancel or switch tiers first, so read our WHOOP free trial guide before you start one.

Recovery and sleep: one score or several

WHOOP's approach is simple to read. Each morning you get one Recovery percentage built from overnight HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen, sleep performance, and skin temperature. The app then turns that into guidance on how hard to train and how much sleep you need.

Garmin spreads the same job across several tools. Body Battery estimates your energy through the day, HRV Status compares your overnight average with your personal baseline, sleep score grades the night, sleep coach recommends how much sleep you need, and Training Readiness blends sleep, HRV, recovery time, and recent training load into a single go-or-slow signal. There is more to learn, but also more detail when one input is dragging the others down.

Both bands rely on optical sensors, and neither sleep-stage breakdown should be treated as lab-grade. Overnight resting heart rate and HRV trends are the useful parts, and each brand's numbers should be compared only with its own baseline. Our recovery metrics guide explains how to read them without overreacting to a single morning.

Training and strain for runners

WHOOP's Strain score counts cardiovascular and muscular load on a 0-21 scale, a useful accountability tool if your training spans several sports. Garmin's tools are more runner-specific: Training Status tells you whether recent training is productive, training load and load focus show the balance of easy and hard work, and the Cirqa estimates running VO2 max after a timed 15-minute brisk walk or run.

Day to day, the Cirqa's single button is a practical advantage: set its favorite activity to Run in the Garmin Connect app, then press once to start and again to stop without touching your phone mid-run. The band keeps its heart-rate sensor in low power until it detects a workout, so a missed or late auto-start costs you workout heart rate and training load; WHOOP, which relies on the app or auto-detection, handles late starts better.

Neither gives you live pace on the wrist, and the Cirqa's wrist heart rate can lag at the start of fast intervals, a common weakness that our optical heart-rate guide explains. In our testing, moving the pod to the Upper Arm Band helped noticeably; WHOOP sells a Bicep Band for the same purpose.

Comfort, battery, and daily wear

Both are comfortable enough to sleep in, which is the point. The Cirqa is light at about 21 grams with its strap, but its pod is long and can overhang a small wrist, and we found swapping straps on its thin spring-bar pins fiddly. WHOOP's bands change more easily and come in a wider range of styles.

WHOOP has the battery advantage. It is rated for 14+ days, and the Peak and Life tiers include a battery pack that charges the band while you wear it. The Cirqa is rated for up to 10 days, and in our testing regular workouts and Pulse Ox pulled it a little short of that; all-day Pulse Ox and heart-rate broadcasting cost more. It also has to come off the wrist to charge, which takes up to 90 minutes.

Apps and ecosystem

This is where the choice usually gets made. Garmin Connect is deep, customizable, free, and shared with Garmin's watches and Edge computers, but it leaves the interpretation to you. Connect+ ($6.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US) adds manual laps, guided workouts, Garmin Coach strength and fitness plans, live heart-rate graphs, and AI insights, but none of the core metrics.

The WHOOP app is built around coaching. It tells you what your Recovery means, how much strain to aim for, and when to go to bed. If you have bounced off dashboards before, that guidance is what the membership pays for.

Choose the Garmin Cirqa if...

  • You already own a Garmin watch or Edge and want one account for everything.
  • You want Training Readiness, Training Status, and VO2 max without a subscription.
  • You like starting workouts with a physical button.
  • You want to broadcast heart rate over ANT+ as well as Bluetooth to a bike computer or gym equipment.
  • You are happy to read the charts and draw your own conclusions.

Choose WHOOP if...

  • You want an app that tells you what to do with your data.
  • You want one simple Recovery score instead of several overlapping ones.
  • You want longer battery life and, on Peak or Life, charging without taking the band off.
  • You are interested in extras such as Healthspan, ECG, or blood pressure insights.
  • You are comfortable with an annual membership.

Pairing either with a running watch

With a Garmin watch, the Cirqa shares one Garmin Connect account: wear the band day and night, record runs on the watch only, and set your Primary Wearable and Primary Training Device so the right numbers win. WHOOP keeps its own app and scores alongside any watch. If your watch is not a Garmin, the Cirqa means two apps as well, and WHOOP's two-way Strava sync can pull pace and distance from runs your watch posts to Strava.

Verdict

For runners who already live in Garmin Connect, the Cirqa is the better buy. It costs about the same as one year of WHOOP One, then stops costing money, and it feeds the same training model your watch uses. WHOOP is the better product for people who want to be told what their data means and are happy to pay every year for that coaching. Neither is a running watch, so decide what records your runs first, then pick the band that fits around it.

FAQ

Is the Garmin Cirqa cheaper than WHOOP?

Over time, yes. The first year costs about the same: $199.99 for the Cirqa versus $199 for WHOOP One. After that, WHOOP renews every year while the Cirqa has no required fee, so over three years the Cirqa costs about $400 less than WHOOP One at US list prices as of October 2026.

Does the Garmin Cirqa have a recovery score like WHOOP?

Garmin's closest equivalent is Training Readiness, supported by Body Battery, HRV Status, and sleep score. WHOOP rolls its overnight data into a single daily Recovery percentage, which is simpler to read.

Do the Garmin Cirqa and WHOOP have GPS?

Neither has built-in GPS. Both use your phone's GPS for outdoor pace, distance, and route, so carry your phone or record runs on a GPS watch.

Which is better if I already own a Garmin watch?

The Cirqa, if you would rather not sleep in your watch: its data merges with the watch in Garmin Connect, so sleep, HRV Status, Body Battery, and training load stay in one place. If you already wear your watch day and night, the Cirqa adds little. WHOOP works alongside a Garmin watch too, but it keeps its own app and scores.

Can I try WHOOP before committing?

Yes. WHOOP offers a one-month free trial of Peak, but it converts to a paid Peak annual membership unless you cancel in time, and a cancelled trial's device and charger must be returned within 14 days of receiving the return label to avoid a restocking fee. Read the current terms before you start.
